Mt. Gox has pushed the deadline for paying back its creditors to October 31, 2027, moving it a year later from the previous target of October 31, 2026, Cointelegraph reported. Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said the Tokyo District Court approved the change, which covers base, early lump-sum and intermediate payments.
Cointelegraph reported that this is the sixth extension since 2023: the fourth annual postponement since September 2023, after two shorter extensions earlier that year. The trustee’s notice did not say how many creditors remain unpaid or how much Bitcoin is still to be distributed.

Key facts
- New repayment deadline: October 31, 2027, approved by the Tokyo District Court, per Cointelegraph.
- Previous deadline: October 31, 2026; the original target was October 31, 2023, according to Finbold.
- Wallet holdings: about 34,400 BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion, as of Tuesday, per Arkham Intelligence data cited by Cointelegraph.
- Repayments began in July 2024, and Mt. Gox said in March 2025 that more than 19,500 creditors had been paid, Cointelegraph reported.
- Cryptobriefing reported the estate planned about 142,000 BTC, about 143,000 BCH and ¥69 billion in cash for distribution.
Who is still waiting
Kobayashi said creditors who finished the required procedures without complications had largely been repaid, except for some payment types. Others are still unpaid because they have not completed the steps, while some hit problems during processing.
The two accounts differ on the remaining Bitcoin. Cointelegraph put the figure at approximately 34,400 BTC, worth about $2.8 billion, citing Arkham data as of Tuesday. Finbold, also citing Arkham, reported about 34,387 BTC held as of September 30, worth roughly $2.88 billion at the time. Cryptobriefing described the holding as about 34,000 to 34,500 BTC.

What the trustee said
According to Finbold, the notice said the trustee changed the deadline, with court permission, so that repayments could be made to creditors to the extent reasonably practicable. Creditors were sent to the claims portal for updates, with a warning that a high volume of inquiries could delay responses, Finbold reported.
Why it matters
The remaining coins sit outside the market for now, so traders watching the estate for signs of new supply have more time. Cryptobriefing reported that the extension sets an outer limit rather than a schedule, so distributions could still come in batches before late 2027. Finbold noted the holding is small relative to the wider Bitcoin market, so any price effect depends on how much is actually distributed. Holders of Bitcoin Cash have a separate reason to follow the trustee: Cryptobriefing reported the estate planned about 143,000 BCH in distributions.
What to watch
The next data points are further trustee updates on how many creditors finish their procedures and any new distribution rounds through intermediaries such as Kraken, Bitstamp and BitGo, which Cryptobriefing named. Whether the October 31, 2027 target holds will also be tracked.
This is not financial advice, and cryptocurrency markets are volatile and uncertain.
