Bitcoin dominance since 2019
The long view shows the cycle: dominance fell sharply in the 2021 altcoin rally, bottomed in 2022 and climbed through 2023 and 2024 as Bitcoin led the market and spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in the United States.
Ether and Tether (USDT) dominance
Tether dominance (USDT.D) is the value of all USDT in circulation divided by the total crypto market cap. Traders watch it because it tends to rise when prices fall, as money sits in stablecoins, and to fall when money moves back into Bitcoin and altcoins.

How to read Bitcoin dominance
| What happens | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin dominance rising, prices rising | Bitcoin is leading the market. New money tends to arrive through Bitcoin first. |
| Bitcoin dominance falling, prices rising | Money is rotating into altcoins. This is how an altcoin season usually shows up. |
| Bitcoin dominance rising, prices falling | A risk-off market: altcoins are falling harder than Bitcoin. |
| Tether dominance rising | More of the market is sitting in stablecoins, often during sell-offs. |
Dominance compares market caps, so it moves when Bitcoin’s price changes relative to everything else, but also when a large new coin is listed or a stablecoin grows. Read it together with prices and the Fear & Greed Index, not on its own. For the full background, see our guide Bitcoin dominance explained.
How the figures are calculated
- Bitcoin and Ether dominance: each coin’s market cap divided by the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies, as published by CoinMarketCap.
- Tether dominance: USDT circulating supply from DefiLlama, divided by the same total market cap.
- Altcoin dominance: 100% minus Bitcoin dominance, the share of every coin except Bitcoin (including Ether and stablecoins).
- History: daily readings at 00:00 UTC since 2019. The live figure refreshes every hour.
