Crypto is up today. Total market value rose 2.0% in 24 hours to $2.76 trillion as of 13:00 UTC on Friday, October 16, 2026. Bitcoin traded at $81,966 (+1.7%) and Ether at $2,462 (+4.8%). 48 of the 50 largest coins were higher, and the median move was +4.7%.
Why is crypto up today? What the numbers show
- Breadth. The move was broad: 48 of 50 large coins rose, so this was market-wide buying rather than one coin pulling the index.
- Bitcoin versus altcoins. 41 of the other 49 large coins did better than Bitcoin, a sign of appetite for smaller, riskier assets. Bitcoin dominance stands at 59.7%, and Ether outperformed Bitcoin by 3.1 percentage points.
- Trading activity. 24-hour volume across the market was $84.3 billion, down 19.6% on the previous day. Volume did not change sharply, so the move was not driven by a surge of trading.
- Bitcoin’s 24-hour range. From $79,814 (13:55 UTC, Oct 15) to $82,760 (11:30 UTC), a 3.7% swing. The high came after the low.
