Yes. The crypto market is open on Saturday and Sunday, on public holidays and through the night. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies trade 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, because they run on global networks and are listed on exchanges that never close. There is no opening bell and no official closing price.
That does not mean every hour is the same. Trading is thinner at weekends, some related products do close, and charts still need a daily and weekly cut-off. This guide covers each of those points.
Why crypto never closes
A stock exchange is a single venue with fixed hours and staff. A cryptocurrency is a network of computers spread around the world that confirms transactions continuously, and it is traded on hundreds of separate exchanges in different countries. No single company or regulator can switch the whole market off, so trading simply continues. Individual exchanges do go offline for maintenance or during outages, but the asset keeps trading elsewhere.
When is the daily and weekly close?
Because there is no real close, the industry uses a convention. Most exchanges and charting platforms build their candles on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC):
- Daily close: 00:00 UTC, which ends the previous day’s candle.
- Weekly close: 00:00 UTC on Monday, which is the end of Sunday. When analysts talk about the Bitcoin weekly close, this is the moment they mean.
- Monthly close: 00:00 UTC on the first day of the new month.
The same moment in other time zones:
| Time zone | Weekly close (local time) |
|---|---|
| UTC | Monday 00:00 |
| New York (ET) | Sunday 8:00 pm in summer, 7:00 pm in winter |
| London | Monday 1:00 am in summer, midnight in winter |
| India (IST) | Monday 5:30 am |
| Singapore / Hong Kong | Monday 8:00 am |
| Tokyo | Monday 9:00 am |
A platform can use a different cut-off if you change its time zone setting, so two charts of the same coin may show slightly different daily candles. Our own weekly crypto market wrap uses a fixed capture time of Sunday 14:00 UTC and prints that timestamp in every edition.
What is different at the weekend
- Lower volume. Many professional trading desks and market makers are less active on Saturday and Sunday. With fewer orders in the book, the same trade moves the price further, so weekend moves can look exaggerated.
- Banks are closed. Crypto trades around the clock but bank transfers do not. Deposits and withdrawals in dollars, euros or rupees made on a weekend are usually processed on the next business day, unless an instant payment system is supported. Stablecoin and crypto transfers are not affected.
- Spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs do not trade. Exchange-traded funds are listed on stock exchanges and follow stock market hours, which in the United States are 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday to Friday. A big weekend move in Bitcoin shows up in these funds only when the market reopens on Monday.
- Regulated futures have had a weekly break. Bitcoin futures on CME have traded from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, US Central Time, which left a gap on the chart whenever spot prices moved over the weekend. Traders call this the CME gap. CME Group said in 2025 that it planned to offer round-the-clock crypto trading from 2026, subject to regulatory review, so check the exchange’s current hours.
Is crypto open on holidays?
Yes. Crypto trades on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Thanksgiving and every other public holiday. The same weekend effects apply: volume is usually lighter, banks are shut and exchange-traded funds do not trade.
The busiest hours
Activity follows the working day in the three main regions. Volume tends to build through Asian hours, rise again when Europe opens and peak when European and US hours overlap, roughly 13:00 to 17:00 UTC on weekdays. US economic data, Federal Reserve decisions and the daily flow figures for spot ETFs all land in that window.
Frequently asked questions
Is the crypto market open on Saturday and Sunday?
Yes. Trading continues all weekend on every major exchange. Only products tied to traditional markets, such as ETFs, pause.
What time does the crypto market close?
It does not close. The reference close used on charts is 00:00 UTC each day, and 00:00 UTC on Monday for the week.
When does the crypto market reset?
There is no reset. People who ask this usually mean the daily candle, which rolls over at 00:00 UTC, or the 24-hour change figure on price sites, which is a rolling window that never resets.
Can I buy Bitcoin at night or on a Sunday?
Yes, as long as you already have funds on an exchange or use a payment method that settles instantly. Bank transfers started at the weekend may not arrive until Monday.
Where can I see what happened over the week?
We publish a data report every Sunday in the weekly crypto market wrap, live prices are on the Markets page, and daily reporting is in Crypto News.
