Google rolls out ‘Preferred Sources’ button to help publishers win back AI-era traffic

Google on Thursday introduced a new interactive “Preferred Sources” button for online publishers, allowing readers to mark a website as a favorite and receive more of its content across Google Search, Discover, and Google News. The move is the latest effort by the search giant to address the growing traffic losses publishers have faced as AI-generated summaries and conversational answers reduce click-through rates to traditional web pages.

Google’s new Preferred Sources button lets readers select publishers they trust, and Google then shows more of that publisher’s content in Search, Discover, and News. The feature, which follows a May rollout to AI Overviews and AI Mode, is designed to boost traffic to news sites and other content creators affected by AI-driven search changes.

How the Preferred Sources button works

Publishers can embed the button directly on their websites. When a reader clicks it, the site is added to that user’s list of preferred sources. Users can also manage their choices by visiting Google’s source preferences page and searching for a publisher by name or URL.

Google said that as of the May launch, more than 345,000 unique sources had already been selected by users across the web. The company’s internal studies suggest people are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when it appears in results.

Why this matters for publishers hit by AI traffic declines

The button is part of a broader strategy to give publishers more control over how their content appears in AI-driven experiences. Since Google began rolling out AI Overviews and AI Mode, many news organizations have reported significant drops in referral traffic from search. The Preferred Sources feature is a direct attempt to counter that trend by letting loyal readers signal their preferences.

“This is a meaningful step toward giving publishers a way to maintain a direct relationship with their audience,” said media analyst Rebecca Greenfield. “But it remains to be seen how much of an impact it will have on the overall traffic decline.”

More AI-powered feed controls for users

Alongside the publisher button, Google announced that readers will soon be able to customize their Discover feed using natural language commands. By tapping the three-dot menu on any post, users can tell Google what they’d like to see more or less of, and the feed will adjust in real time.

Android users will also get the ability to personalize their audio daily briefings in the Google News app, tailoring the topics and sources included in their morning update.

These features mirror a broader industry shift toward user-controlled algorithms. In recent months, several major social media platforms have launched similar tools that allow users to fine-tune their content recommendations.

What this means for the future of news discovery

The introduction of Preferred Sources signals that Google recognizes the tension between its AI products and the publishers whose content feeds them. By giving readers a direct way to elevate trusted sources, Google is hoping to maintain a healthy web ecosystem while still pushing forward with AI-powered search.

For publishers, the button offers a new tool to cultivate loyalty, but it is not a silver bullet. Traffic recovery will likely depend on a combination of these features, quality content, and the continued evolution of Google’s algorithms.

As the media environment adjusts, the coming months will show whether these tools meaningfully shift the balance of power between AI-driven discovery and traditional publishing.
