Ethereum closed the third quarter of 2026 with 43.8 million ETH staked, the highest total on record and equal to 35.9% of the network’s total supply, according to Ambcrypto, citing Bitwise’s Q4 2026 Staking Report. The same quarter brought a smaller reward: gross staking yield slipped to 2.63% from 2.81%.
Ambcrypto reported that net staking inflows reached 1.99 million ETH in the quarter, the sixth straight quarter in which more ETH entered staking than left it. Cryptobriefing, which also covered the Bitwise report, noted that staked ETH stood at about 36.3 million at the start of 2026 before climbing toward 44 million by the fall.

Key facts
- Bitwise’s Q4 2026 Staking Report, published October 20, 2026, put staked ETH at 43.8 million by the end of Q3, or 35.9% of supply.
- Net staking inflows were 1.99 million ETH, the sixth consecutive quarter of net inflows.
- Gross staking yield fell to 2.63% from 2.81% in the prior quarter.
- Active validators dropped to 881,000 from roughly 1.1 million, a decline Cryptobriefing reported Bitwise attributed to operator consolidation after the Pectra upgrade.
- Bitmine staked another 159,728 ETH, worth about $390.6 million, lifting its total staked holdings to 5.23 million ETH, or roughly $12.78 billion, per Lookonchain data cited by Ambcrypto.
Bitmine pushes institutional staking higher
Ambcrypto reported that the Bitmine transaction brought the company’s staked assets to about 86.5% of its total ETH holdings, reflecting a strategy of earning staking rewards while keeping large exposure to the token. Lookonchain’s post on X was the source for the transaction figures.
The two reports diverge slightly on timing and totals: Ambcrypto said October data had earlier put total staked ETH slightly lower, while Cryptobriefing reported that those earlier October figures showed validator counts between 863,000 and 868,000. Cryptobriefing also placed the Bitwise report’s publication on October 20, 2026.

ETH holds $2,400 support
Ambcrypto reported that Ethereum traded around $2,446 after pulling back from $2,800 resistance, oscillating between $2,400 support and $2,535 resistance. The daily RSI recovered to 42.80 against a signal average of 39.87, still below the 50 threshold, while the Parabolic SAR sat above the price at $2,547.94 — a reading Ambcrypto said kept the bearish structure intact.
Derivatives positioning leaned bullish. Ambcrypto reported that long accounts made up 67.91% of Binance’s top trader accounts, giving a long/short ratio of 2.12, and that spot ETH netflows were negative $2.34 million on October 21.
Why it matters
A record share of supply locked in staking means a large group of holders is choosing a modest, predictable return over keeping coins liquid, and that preference held even as the payout shrank. For stakers relying on income, rising participation spreads the same reward pool across more ETH, so yields can keep compressing. Bitwise’s research suggested growing staked totals could pull in more institutional capital seeking staking returns, which would likely push participation higher and yields lower again. Operator consolidation after Pectra has also reshaped who runs the network, concentrating the same staked ETH in fewer, larger setups.
What to watch
The data points that will define the next chapter are clear: whether net inflows stretch the streak to a seventh quarter, whether gross yield continues sliding from 2.63%, and whether the validator count settles after the post-Pectra consolidation wave. On price, Ethereum needs a sustained rebound to retest $2,535 resistance.
