Memecoins lost a combined $108.7 billion in market value over 14 days, leaving the segment valued at $25.76 billion, or roughly 3% of total altcoin capitalization, according to Ambcrypto. The outlet reported the figures on October 19, 2026, citing CryptoQuant and TradingView data.

Over the past year, Dogecoin fell 57.92%, Pepe 39.15% and Shiba Inu 49.37%, Ambcrypto reported. Altcoin market capitalization stood at $791.5 billion after the two-week slide.

Key facts

  • Memecoins shed $108.7 billion in 14 days, with the segment’s value falling to $25.76 billion, about 3% of total altcoin market cap.
  • The cumulative buy/sell volume difference went from roughly $14.56 million in favor of buyers on October 16, 2025, to about -$1.4 billion on October 16, 2026.
  • The Altcoin Season Index slid to around 55 in October after reaching the Altcoin Season zone in late September.
  • The Fear and Greed Index sat at 59, a greed reading that the report described as moderately bullish.
  • About $35.92 billion in capital flowed back into the market between October 18 and 19.

Selling pressure outweighs buying

The clearest signal in the report is the cumulative volume difference, which tracks whether trade flow favors buyers or sellers. A year ago, buy volume ran ahead of sell volume by more than $14 million. That gap has reversed into a deficit of about $1.4 billion, meaning sellers have dominated the flow for an extended stretch.

Memecoins have fared worse than other altcoins in the same period, with the segment’s share of the altcoin market shrinking to 3%. Coins whose value rests mainly on community culture rather than product use have absorbed the bulk of the exits.

Indicators point to more downside

The Altcoin Season Index, which gauges whether altcoins are positioned for a strong rally, climbed through late August and September and peaked in the Altcoin Season band late last month. It has since fallen to about 55. Ambcrypto read the decline as evidence that investors are leaving rather than accumulating, a pattern that tends to weigh hardest on speculative segments such as memecoins.

The Fear and Greed Index, by contrast, showed a reading of 59, which the report framed as moderately bullish and a possible sign of calmer conditions ahead.

Why it matters

The losses reshape where capital sits within the altcoin market. If the reported inflows since October 18 are put to work, the report expects that money to favor assets with utility over tokens whose appeal is cultural. For holders of memecoins, that would mean the recovery path runs through a segment that is currently out of favor, while projects with working products would see the benefit first.

What to watch

The next test is whether the roughly $35.92 billion that returned on October 18 and 19 keeps growing or reverses. The Altcoin Season Index reading near 55 and the Fear and Greed reading of 59 are the two gauges the report uses to judge whether the market can stabilize.

This is not financial advice; crypto markets are volatile and uncertain, and past performance does not indicate future results.
