Google on Wednesday rolled out a broad expansion of AI-powered study tools across Search and Gemini, adding interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated student hub, and custom practice quizzes. The update, announced in a company blog post, is Google’s latest push to position Gemini as the go-to AI assistant for students, directly competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and education-focused startups like Knowt and Gauth.
The announcement comes as AI-assisted learning has become one of the most contested battlegrounds in consumer tech. OpenAI has pushed ChatGPT into classrooms with features like voice-based tutoring and code interpretation, while a wave of startups has built specialized homework and test-prep apps. Google’s advantage, analysts say, is its ubiquity: Search and Lens are already where many students begin their research, and the company is now embedding study aids directly into those entry points.

What’s new in Search
In Search, students can now generate custom tools and simulations to help them understand complex subjects. For example, a search for “pH scale” returns an interactive visual within an AI Overview that lets users explore the basics. Students can then ask follow-up questions, such as plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale, and AI Mode in Search will generate a tailored interactive experience.
The company is also introducing custom practice quizzes directly in Search, covering subjects like science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. Users can prompt Search with a request like, “Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT,” and the system will produce an interactive quiz. Google says these quizzes are generated on the fly and can be adjusted based on the user’s skill level.

In the coming weeks, Lens in Search will gain a new interactive learning experience. Students can tap the Lens camera icon in the Google app and upload a photo of a problem they’re working on. The AI will then explain the underlying concept, identify potential mistakes, and offer guidance if they’re stuck.
Additionally, students can now ask Search to create study documents based on uploaded files, including PDFs, docs, and slides. For instance, a student could upload a photo of handwritten notes along with lecture slides to receive a one-pager outlining key concepts.
Gemini’s new study features
On the Gemini side, Google is launching a feature that lets students launch multi-step research reports in Gemini Live and then discuss the findings conversationally. Users can ask Gemini to research a topic and then close the chat or do other things while it works in the background. A notification appears when the report is ready, and users can then discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions using their voice.
Gemini can now also generate functional 3D simulations to help users better understand scientific and mathematical concepts. Responses will include tables, grids, and simulations made specifically for the prompt. For example, a prompt like “show me how DNA works in 3D” yields an interactive DNA structure that users can rotate and zoom into.
Google is also launching a dedicated hub in the Gemini app that brings its learning tools together in one place. Users can start a study notebook, create flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more within the hub. The hub is designed to be a one-stop shop for students who want to organize their study materials without jumping between apps.
What this means for students and the edtech market
The new tools reflect a broader shift in how students interact with information. Rather than passively reading articles or watching videos, they can now actively manipulate simulations and test themselves with AI-generated quizzes. This hands-on approach aligns with research on active learning, which suggests that students retain more when they engage with material rather than just consume it.
For the edtech industry, Google’s entry into this space could be disruptive. Startups like Knowt and Gauth have built their products around AI-powered practice and homework help, but they lack Google’s distribution and brand recognition. “Google has a massive advantage here,” said Sarah Johnson, an education technology analyst at a market research firm. “If a student is already in Search, they don’t need to download a separate app to get help.”
However, some educators have raised concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated study materials and the potential for students to rely too heavily on AI rather than developing critical thinking skills. Google says it has built in safeguards, including prompts that encourage students to work through problems themselves rather than simply providing answers.
The rollout will happen gradually. Search features are available starting Wednesday, while the Lens-based learning experience and the Gemini student hub will expand over the next few weeks. Google has not announced whether any of these features will be exclusive to its Google AI Pro subscription, but the company has previously reserved some advanced Gemini capabilities for paying users.
