Anthropic announced on Tuesday that it is unifying the memory systems of its Claude chat interface and its agentic work tool, Claude Cowork, effectively ending the tedious loop of re-explaining project context every time a user switches between the two. The update, which began rolling out this week, also introduces a new transparency layer that allows users to read, edit, or delete exactly what the AI has stored about them.
The change directly addresses a common pain point for power users who used Claude for research and planning before moving to Cowork to execute tasks. Previously, insights developed over long chat sessions were siloed, forcing users to manually re-input critical details like headcounts, budgets, or project references when they switched to the agentic workspace.

One assistant, not two products
Anthropic’s core goal with this update is to make Claude feel like a single, continuous assistant rather than two distinct products sharing a brand. By merging the memory architecture, the company is closing a functional gap that frustrated users who wanted a fluid transition from ideation to execution.
For instance, a user who spent weeks chatting with Claude about planning a corporate conference will now find that Cowork already understands the context. It would know the venue city, the list of speakers, and the expected headcount without requiring a fresh briefing. This shift moves the assistant from a transactional tool to a more persistent collaborator.

Real-time memory updates and user control
Beyond the unification, Anthropic has changed how memories are recorded. Instead of summarizing a conversation at its conclusion, Claude now updates its memory in real-time as the chat progresses. This means that even an ongoing conversation will have its latest details available to Cowork instantly, allowing users to switch contexts mid-thought without losing momentum.
The company is also addressing privacy concerns head-on with a new memory management interface. Users can now see a list of topics Claude has stored and can delete or edit any entry. By default, Anthropic states that Claude will avoid saving sensitive personal information such as health data, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, and gender identity. Users who wish to have Claude remember these aspects must actively toggle on an “include sensitive topics in memory” setting. The app will also notify users in real-time whenever a sensitive topic is saved.
However, certain data categories remain off-limits regardless of user preference. Anthropic has stated that Claude will never store government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, criminal history, or immigration status, aligning with its acceptable use policy.
Availability and rollout
The unified memory feature is enabled by default across all paid tiers (Pro and Max) as well as the Free plan. It is available on web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Users on iOS and Android will need to update their apps to the latest version to access the new functionality.
This update comes as Anthropic continues to differentiate its assistant in a crowded market where persistent context is becoming a key battleground. By making memory a first-class, transparent feature, the company is betting that users will prefer an AI that remembers not just for convenience, but with clear oversight and control. The move signals a broader industry trend toward more personalized, continuous AI interactions, while also acknowledging the growing user demand for data privacy and agency.
